| TRAVEL BOOKS |
| By Denis Montgomery |
| Denis Montgomery published two books on African travel in a planned trilogy in 1988 and 1992. These books, out of print for many years, are acquiring historical interest because of the rapid changes occurring in Africa. They are re-published here. |
| To provide comparisons, and give what has become historical perspective, an earlier book, Crest of the Wave, has been included. It describes a journey from London to Durban, South Africa, in 1965. This grand safari was undertaken as youthful adventure but it had a serious purpose: to see what Africa was like at the moment of colonial emancipation. |
| Mud, Sands and Seas is a fascinating and substantial collection of short stories and essays covering the author's travels, not described in the major books, during the period 1949-2007. |
| THE BOOKS |
| The Reflected Face of Africa |
The first of the planned trilogy. This book was
published in 1988 both in the United Kingdom and South Africa
and was reviewed favourably in the media of both countries.
It describes a six-month journey through fourteen countries
in a Dragoman overlanding truck with 15-20 companions from
Johannesburg to Europe via East Africa, the Congo and the
Sahara in 1985-86. This Second Edition has been substantially revised and expanded. |

| Two Shores of the Ocean |
First published in 1992, the second book of the
planned trilogy follows the author's safaris and
investigations around the western Indian Ocean rim. To obtain
material he traveled the Malabar and Coromandel Coasts of
India, Kenya, Zanzibar, Mozambique and South Africa. In this
book the author begins exploring African prehistory and the
Seashore Hypothesis for human evolution. This book was long out of print, therefore a second edition has now been published to maintain the continuity of the author's publications. |

| Crest of the Wave |
Although this is not part of the original
trilogy, it is included for its increasing historical value.
It is the story of the author's safari from London to Durban,
South Africa, in his own Landrover with one companion, in
1965. In that year most countries in Africa were in the
process of emerging from colonialism. |

| Mud, Sands and Seas |
These writings describe personal safaris undertaken over nearly sixty years, mostly in Africa, but also around the Indian Ocean rim. During this time many changes have occurred. The author's own attitudes, perspectives and goals changed in those long years too, but always he was searching for understanding and to increase his knowledge.
Some of the journals were written on a laptop computer while travelling and were subsequently edited and abbreviated. |
